September 15, 2021

It is the most modern neighborhood in the City of Buenos Aires. Just a few blocks from old San Telmo and the city center, Puerto Madero appears to be a different city.

The neighborhood combines historic port buildings, built with bricks and iron arches, with modern and elegant restaurants and skyscrapers with glass walls.

In addition, here, you can find a huge Ecological Reserve with access to the river.

Woman’s bridge (Puente de la Mujer)

It has become the main icon of the classic Puerto Madero postcard. It is a bridge, built by the famous architect Santiago de Calatarava in 2001.

The abstract design is a synthesis of a tango couple. It represents all the outstanding Argentine women in the history of the country. You can cross the bridge on foot, with the company of the old dikes, which used to work in the port.

On one side of the bridge you can find the Sarmiento Frigate (Fragata Sarmiento), a historic ship that was part of the Argentine Navy. For a few years it has operated as a museum with nautical instruments.

Walking by the Docks

Puerto Madero used to be the commercial port of Buenos Aires. The old exposed brick levees were remodeled to serve as universities, restaurants, offices and residences.

Across the canal is a modern skyline of luxurious residential buildings, forming a picturesque contrast.

It is very pleasant to walk on both sides of the canal enjoying the view, the restaurants and the particular panorama of this part of the city.

Along the way you will find the Fortabat Art Collection, the most important museum in the neighborhood, with works by Andy Warhol, William Turner and some of the best national painters.

Ecological Reserve

The only protected natural area in the city of Buenos Aires is located on the banks of the Río de la Plata, near the Microcentro. With free admission, you can enjoy a walk surrounded by nature.

There are self-guided trails to discover the species of flora and fauna found in the reserve. The most attractive thing is the view, since it has a beach with access to the river and viewpoints from the trails.

It has 350 hectares of green spaces, lagoons and wetlands, and beautiful and immense forests. It is a great option to get out of the skyscrapers and traffic scenery.
