In times when gastronomy had to reinvent itself due to the pandemic, three Argentine bars were distinguished by the most demanding committee in the field worldwide.
The ranking of the 50 best bars in the world had a high Argentine presence: three national corners managed to conquer a place by crowning themselves within the international universe of cocktails. Thus, Florería Atlántico reached 5th place; President Bar, the 21st; and Tres Monos, the 33rd.
“The World’s 50 Best” (in Spanish, “the 50 best in the world) is a prestigious British competition that annually chooses and rewards the best gastronomic spaces in the world. Within the selection of bars, the first two places went to places in the United Kingdom, the territory “that plays home” in this competition: thus Connaught Bar and Tay?r + Elementary, both from London, occupied 1st and 2nd place , respectively.
Florería Atlántico: the 5th best in the world
These English bars are followed by the Spanish Paradiso and the Greek The Clumsies, and behind them appears the first national pride: the one that completes the top 5 and, therefore, the best outside of Europe, is Florería Atlántico, located in the center porteño; more precisely in Arroyo 872, in the Retiro neighborhood.
In 2019, the bar of the bartender Renato “Tato” Giovannoni had made history in Argentine cocktails by coming third in the ranking and being distinguished, then, as the best in Latin America, an achievement that it continues to preserve. It should also be remembered that since 2016, when it ranked 49th, being the only South American bar to enter the ranking, it was consistently nominated year after year.
President: the bar that climbed the most within the top 50
But Giovannoni's bar is not the only Argentine to be highlighted by the most demanding evaluation committee in the world in the field. For the third consecutive year, President was also chosen as one of the 50 best in the world and this time he climbed in the ranking: in 2019 he was ranked 33; in 2020, in the 50, bordering the classification; and this time, it reached 21st. For this reason, this Buenos Aires corner received a special award, the Nikka Highest Climber Award 2021 (translated as the maximum climber), which is sponsored by Nikka Whiskey (Japanese blend).
It is located in an old house on Calle Presidente Quintana 188, in Recoleta, where Bioy Casares lived for several years, and - driven by the expertise of its bar boss, Sebastián García ("El Cantinero") - managed to position itself internationally in a while record: with only 2 years of history it managed to enter the ranking for the first time.
In this way, this bar, which has only been in existence for 5 years, intends to open a branch in Wynwood, Miami's artistic neighborhood par excellence, in April or May 2022.
Tres Monos: from 85th to 33rd place nonstop
In 2020, the only Argentine bar that entered the top 100, in addition to the two mentioned above, was Tres Monos, which - very shortly after its inauguration - conquered the 85th place. In 2021, this corner of Palermo Soho (Guatemala 4899) climbed more than 50 positions and entered “The World’s 50 Best” for the first time; this time, in 33rd place.
This bar opened its doors in 2019 and belongs to Sebastián Atienza (ex-Florería Atlántico) and Charly Aguinsky, and stands out mainly for its variety of liquors. In addition, it also has an educational beta and above the bar there is a drink academy.
